HISTORY OF LIVING SPRINGS ASSEMBLIES OF GOD (LSAG), UG – LEGON

The Beginning of the Church

In the beginning, Professors Ebenezer Asibey-Berko, Ofori Sarpong, Naa John Sebiyam Nabila, Kofi Oduro Afriyie and Mrs. Grace Bentil under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and with the support of Mr. Baba Mahama and then General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God, Ghana, Rev. Dr. Simon B. Asore championed the establishment of the LSAG Church.

It all began in 2001 when the Lord laid it on the hearts of the above-mentioned pioneers to begin a church comprising of both Assemblies of God Campus Ministry (AGCM) members (mostly students) and senior members, most of whom were lecturers, masters and doctoral students of the University of Ghana, Legon. This move was met with some apprehension from the two groups despite the encouragement from Rev. Dr. Simon B. Asore. The consensus then was to form a new Church with the mission “to reach predominantly University of Ghana staff as well as members of adjoining communities who wanted to join the Church”. Its vision then was “to win and disciple people to live lives of holiness and power”.

On 29th September, 2002, the first church service was held at the Akuafo Hall of the University of Ghana. This service was attended by Prof. and Mrs. Oduro Afriyie, Prof. and Mrs. Nabila, Prof. and Mrs. Asibey-Berko (and their families) as well as Prof. Ofori Sarpong who preached on the first day.

The vision and mission of the Church were officially launched in 2003 at the Volta Hall Chapel of the University of Ghana where the Church was known and referred to as Assemblies of God, University of Ghana Campus Church (AGCC). However, in November 2011, the Church was christened Living Springs Assemblies of God (LSAG), University of Ghana, Legon following a prayerful consultation between the leadership and members of the Church.

Leadership of Rev. Prof. Ebenezer Asibey-Berko

Rev. Prof. Ebenezer Asibey-Berko was the Senior Pastor of the LSAG Church from its official inception in 2003 to 2013, while Prof. Oduro Afriyie, Pastor Lifodzi, and Pastor Benjamin Boateng were his Associates at various times during his tenure. Rev. Prof Asibey-Berko was formally installed as the Head Pastor on Sunday, 17th April, 2005 at a ceremony conducted under the leadership of then District Pastor, Rev. Dr. Bismark Bansah and other supporting ministers.

History

The mustard seed of five pioneers grew to 104 members comprising 46 active adults, 50 active children and eight members who were abroad by the time LSAG was celebrating its 5th Anniversary in September 2007 under the theme: “Kept by the Power of God”. Membership comprised mainly members of the University Community and neighbouring communities such as Okponglo, Mempeasem, Shiashie and then Institute of Professional Studies (IPS) now, University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), as well as graduates from the Assemblies of God Campus Ministries (AGCM). Most of the members joined the Church following evangelistic activities embarked on by LSAG such as door-to-door evangelism, sharing of Bible-based tracts and open-air crusades with the support of AGCM.
